From a Bench to a Real Bed

After years of homelessness and an 18-month wait for public housing, lifelong Charleston peninsula resident Darryl is finally getting a home.

Darryl has lived on the Charleston peninsula his entire life. After a work accident left him disabled, he became homeless and remained without stable housing for many years.

Finding him a place to live wasn’t easy. The wait for public housing was expected to be two years. After 18 months, however, the news everyone had been hoping for finally came: Darryl was approved for an apartment at Archer School Apartments on Nassau Street, and his deposit was paid.

As Dove Fund President Amy Forney put it, the Dove Fund was helping Darryl get off the bench and into a real bed.

The news meant something to the neighborhood, too. Amy shared Darryl’s story with nearby Vern’s Restaurant, where co-owner Bethany Heinze knew exactly who she was talking about. She described Darryl as a positive, friendly presence on Ashe Street and immediately offered to help support the effort.

Darryl’s story is a reminder that housing stability can take persistence, patience and a community willing to care about what happens to its neighbors.

After years without a home, Darryl finally has a place of his own.
